Hearing aid prices by where you buy
Where you buy matters more than the brand; the table above gives HearingTracker’s average price per pair for each channel.[1] Buyers at a local audiology clinic or private practice paid $3,601 a pair on average.[1] The survey is based on 879 U.S. pair purchases with a reported price, from responses collected in 2025, and excludes hearing aids from the VA.[1] CoveredUSA reports that basic prescription pairs at traditional clinics average $2,150 and top tier pairs average $5,225.[2]
What is a fair price for hearing aids?
There is no single fair price, but the survey averages give a benchmark for a pair: about $500 for OTC aids, about $1,700 at Costco, about $2,700 across all buyers and about $4,700 at a traditional clinic without insurance.[1] A quote well above the clinic average deserves questions: ask what the price includes, such as the hearing test, fitting, follow-up visits, warranty and trial period, since clinic prices are often bundled with these services.[1] Compare at least one lower cost channel, such as Costco, which includes free follow-up visits, cleanings and adjustments for the life of the aids.[3]
Over the counter hearing aid prices
OTC hearing aids are for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, and have been sold without a prescription since October 17, 2022.[6] OTC pairs averaged $502 in HearingTracker’s survey, with a $200 median, from a small sample.[2] CoveredUSA puts the OTC range at $200 to $1,600.[2] Examples of aids sold directly to consumers:
- Jabra Enhance Select: M1 $1,195, M2 $1,695 and M3 $1,995 a pair, with 3 years of remote follow-up care from its audiology team, a 100-day trial and a 3-year warranty.[5]
- Apple AirPods Pro 3 at Costco: $249.99 a pair.[3]
What the price includes
Prescription hearing aids from a clinic are often bundled with the hearing test, fitting and follow-up visits. Online and OTC prices may leave out professional fitting, which is why online pairs without fitting averaged $922 against $2,643 with fitting.[1] Ask what visits, warranty and trial period come with the price.
Hearing test cost
A hearing test costs $75 to $350 without insurance. CoveredUSA lists $100 to $250 at an independent audiologist, $150 to $350 at an ENT office and $200 to $600 at a hospital outpatient clinic, and as little as $20 to $50 at a community health center for patients below the federal poverty level.[4]
Hearing aids and insurance or Medicare
Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or exams for fitting them. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer extra hearing benefits.[7] At traditional clinics, buyers with insurance paid an average of $2,567 a pair, against $4,727 without.[1] CoveredUSA notes that VA audiology care is $0 for eligible veterans.[2]
Are hearing aids free for over 60s?
Not in the U.S. There is no age at which hearing aids become free: Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or fitting exams, though some Medicare Advantage plans offer extra hearing benefits.[7] VA audiology care is $0 for eligible veterans.[2] In the UK, the NHS provides hearing aids free as a long-term loan after a GP referral, with no age rule stated.[10]
What is the lifespan of a hearing aid?
Most prescription hearing aids are designed to last three to seven years. Behind-the-ear models often last five to seven years, in-the-ear models three to five, and the smallest in-the-canal styles closer to three.[9] Frequent repairs, or a maker no longer producing parts for your model, are signs it is time to replace them.[9] Spread over five years, Costco’s $1,674 average pair works out to about $335 a year.[1]
How to pay less for hearing aids
- Get a hearing test first. It tells you whether OTC aids fit your level of loss. Costco’s is free for members.[3][6]
- Compare channels. Costco’s average of $1,674 a pair is less than half the $4,727 average at traditional clinics without insurance.[1]
- Use the trial period. Costco offers 6 months and Jabra Enhance 100 days.[3][5]
- Use a hearing discount program. Care Anytime’s Hearing Discounts benefit lists 35% to 70% off MSRP on most hearing aids bought through an Amplifon Hearing Health Care network provider, with 1 year of follow-up care and 2 years of batteries.[8]
- Budget for the hearing test. A test costs $75 to $350 without insurance outside Costco;[4] compare other out-of-pocket prices in the medical costs without insurance guides, such as the eye exam cost guide.
