Single tooth implant cost

A complete implant has three parts: the post placed in the jaw, the abutment that connects it, and the crown you see. Pearl warns that a quoted implant price is almost always just the surgical placement, so ask for the all-in cost.[1]

The three single-tooth figures in the table above measure different things. Pearl’s is the placement only, based on ADA fee survey data.[1] Real Dental Costs’ all-in figure is an editorial estimate for independent dentists, which it labels as modeled rather than collected prices.[2] CareCredit’s 2023 to 2024 cost study gives the standard implant average and also lists $4,593 for an implant with an allograft and $860 for a single mini implant.[3]

Full mouth dental implants cost

Full-arch treatments anchor a whole row of teeth on four to six implants, so the price is quoted per arch (upper or lower), and a full mouth means two arches. Real Dental Costs puts full mouth implants for both arches at $36,000 to $100,000, with a $65,000 average.[2] The total depends on the design:

  • All-on-4 or All-on-6: the per-arch prices are in the table above. CareCredit’s cost study lists lower averages of $15,176 for All-on-4 and $29,980 for All-on-6, without saying whether those are per arch.[2][3]
  • Zygomatic implants, anchored in the cheekbone when the upper jaw has too little bone: $30,000 to $50,000 per arch, averaging $40,000.[2]
  • Snap-in implant dentures cost far less than fixed teeth; compare denture cost if a removable option would work for you.

Chain prices reported by Real Dental Costs:[2]

  • ClearChoice: $5,000 to $7,500 for a single tooth, $10,500 to $13,500 for an implant bridge, $8,000 to $13,500 per arch for implant dentures and $14,000 to $36,000 per arch for fixed full-arch implants.
  • Aspen Dental: $4,259 average per implant, range $3,158 to $6,533, including post, abutment and crown.
  • Affordable Dentures & Implants: starting at $2,700 per implant post to secure a denture and $12,995 per arch for fixed implant teeth, with extractions billed on top.

Dental implants bone graft cost

Bone loss is the most common reason an implant quote rises.[2] Real Dental Costs’ bone graft and sinus lift ranges are in the table above; CareCredit’s cost study lists averages of $558 for a socket graft, $811 for an allograft and $2,022 for a sinus lift.[2][3] CareCredit’s average for an implant placed with an allograft is $4,593.[3] Pearl notes that a graft can add 3 to 6 months of healing before the implant goes in.[1]

Other items to budget for when they apply:[2]

  • Consultation and exam: $100 to $350
  • 3D CBCT scan: $300 to $600
  • Tooth extraction: $150 to $500 (see tooth extraction cost)
  • IV sedation: $500 to $1,500 or more

Dental implant cost with insurance

  • Implant post: some PPO plans cover placement at 50% after the deductible, up to the annual maximum; others exclude implants or need a separate implant rider.[1]
  • Missing tooth clause: plans that cover implants often require the tooth to have been lost while you were enrolled in the current plan.[1]
  • Related steps: many plans cover the extraction, bone graft or crown at about 50% even when they exclude the implant itself.[2]
  • Annual maximum: most plans cap what they pay at $1,000 to $2,000 a year, so one implant can use the whole benefit.[4]
  • HSA and FSA: these funds apply to out-of-pocket implant costs.[1]

Implant cost by state

Pearl’s state averages for implant placement run from $2,670 in Oklahoma and $2,705 in Louisiana to $3,760 in New York and $3,895 in Hawaii.[1] For a complete single implant, Real Dental Costs estimates $3,759 in Alabama against $5,733 in California.[2]

How to pay less for dental implants

  1. Get an itemized quote. Confirm the post, abutment, crown, imaging and any graft are all listed, so you compare like for like.[2]
  2. Compare a general dentist and a specialist. Oral surgeons and periodontists typically charge more for placement than general dentists.[1]
  3. Split treatment across two calendar years. If your plan covers part of the work, staging it can use two annual maximums.[2]
  4. Use pre-tax money. HSA and FSA funds apply to implant costs.[1]
  5. Ask about a dental discount plan. You pay a reduced fee at a participating dentist. Care Anytime’s dental benefit lists a 20% reduction on specialists’ normal fees, including oral surgery, periodontics and prosthodontics, where available.[5] See how dental discount plans work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does one dental implant cost?

A complete single implant with post, abutment and crown costs about $3,760 to $5,733, with a $4,507 average, in Real Dental Costs' estimate for independent dentists. CareCredit's cost study puts a standard implant at $4,344 per tooth. Pearl's ADA-based average of $3,075 covers the implant placement only, not the crown.

How much do full mouth dental implants cost?

Real Dental Costs puts full mouth implants for both arches at $36,000 to $100,000, with a $65,000 average. All-on-4 runs $18,000 to $35,000 per arch and All-on-6 $24,000 to $38,000 per arch.

How much does All-on-4 cost?

Sources differ. Real Dental Costs gives $18,000 to $35,000 per arch with a $26,000 average. CareCredit's 2023 to 2024 cost study lists an All-on-4 average of $15,176. ClearChoice publishes $14,000 to $36,000 per arch for fixed full-arch implants, as reported by Real Dental Costs.

How much does a bone graft add to a dental implant?

Does dental insurance cover implants?

Sometimes. Pearl says some PPO plans cover implant placement at 50% after the deductible, up to the annual maximum, while others exclude implants. Real Dental Costs says many plans that exclude the implant still cover related steps such as the extraction, bone graft or crown at about 50%.

Is an implant or a bridge cheaper?

A bridge usually costs less up front. Pearl says implants do not require altering the neighboring teeth and often last 20 years or more, against 10 to 15 years for a bridge. See the dental bridge cost guide for bridge prices.

What is the 3/2 rule for dental implants?

It is not one standard rule, and dental sites describe it in different ways. The best-supported part is spacing: a 2000 New York University study in the Journal of Periodontology found crestal bone loss of 1.04 mm when two implants were 3 mm or less apart, against 0.45 mm when they were more than 3 mm apart. Ask your surgeon which spacing and depth rules they plan with.

Does Aspen Dental do implants?

Yes. Aspen Dental lists single-tooth implants, implant bridges, implant dentures and full-arch implants, and does not post a price. Real Dental Costs reports an Aspen average of $4,259 per implant, with a range of $3,158 to $6,533, including post, abutment and crown.

Do dental discount plans cover implants?

A discount plan does not pay the dentist; you pay a reduced fee at a participating dentist. Care Anytime's dental benefit lists a 20% reduction on specialists' normal fees, including oral surgery, periodontics and prosthodontics, where available.
