Wegovy vs Mounjaro for weight loss

Wegovy is labeled for weight management; Mounjaro is labeled for type 2 diabetes, and Lilly states it is not a weight loss drug.[2][5][6] In Wegovy’s trials, adults without diabetes lost an average 14.9% at 68 weeks on 2.4 mg, adults with type 2 diabetes lost 9.6%, and adults with obesity on Wegovy HD 7.2 mg lost 18.8% at 72 weeks.[5] For Mounjaro, Lilly says adults with type 2 diabetes lost 12 to 25 pounds in its studies, depending on dose.[2]

No trial has compared Wegovy and Mounjaro as brands. SURMOUNT-5 compared their ingredients at weight management doses in adults with obesity and no diabetes, and found an average 20.2% weight loss on tirzepatide against 13.7% on semaglutide at 72 weeks; it was open label and funded by Eli Lilly.[7] Lilly’s weight management tirzepatide brand is Zepbound; see Mounjaro vs Zepbound and Wegovy vs Zepbound. Frequently asked questions

Is Mounjaro or Wegovy better for weight loss?

Only Wegovy is approved for weight management. In its main trial, adults without diabetes lost an average 14.9% at 68 weeks on 2.4 mg against 2.4% on placebo. Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes; its ingredient, tirzepatide, is sold for weight management as Zepbound. Is Wegovy cheaper than Mounjaro?

Paying cash, yes: the Wegovy pill is $149 to $299 a month and the pen $199 to $399, while Mounjaro's list price is $1,112.16 for 28 days and Lilly posts no self-pay price. With commercial coverage, both savings offers let you pay as little as $25.

Can I take Mounjaro if I do not have diabetes?

Mounjaro is approved for adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes, and its savings card requires a prescription for an FDA-approved use. Zepbound has the same ingredient and is approved for weight management. Your clinician decides what to prescribe.

Does Medicare cover Wegovy or Mounjaro?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge covers Wegovy, injection or tablet, for $50 a month for eligible enrollees from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027. Mounjaro is not on the Bridge; people with type 2 diabetes should ask their Medicare drug plan, which may already cover a GLP-1.

Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?

Only with your prescriber. Wegovy's label says not to use it with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist, and Mounjaro starts at 2.5 mg a week. Your clinician decides the timing and dose.
